Calculation of the Electromagnetic Force

To obtain the valid calculation results of the electromagnetic force, the conditions below must be fulfilled.

  1. Give some gap between the bodies which will be subjected to the electromagnetic force with each other.
Femtet calculates the electromagnetic force with nodal force method.
If there is no gap, calculation cannot be performed properly with the nodal force method as the nodes exist commonly on the two contacting faces.

  2. Make mesh size small enough (at least, less than half of the gap) between the bodies where they are subjected to the electromagnetic force with each other and the magnetic field concentrates.
As the electromagnetic force is affected by the squared magnetic flux density, the smaller mesh size will give more accuracy.

Example (Example 4: Magnetic Material Pulled by Horseshoe Magnet)

In this example, there is a gap between the horseshoe magnet and the magnetic material (Fe).

Mesh size is set at 0.5[mm] for both ends of the magnet.
