Contact Analysis Between Ball and Bat Leading to Bat Breakage

GeneralThis is a contact analysis example of a baseball bat and a ball, in which the bat fractures after contacting the ball.
Analysis ModelInitial velocities in opposite directions are assigned to the bat and the ball.
Contact Surface and Target Surface boundary conditions are defined at the contact region.
To analyze the states before and after the bat fractures, two models are prepared and a result-import analysis is performed.
A gap is created in advance at the intended fracture location of the bat. The surfaces of this gap are assigned Rigid Surface boundary conditions. In the model after result import, these boundary conditions are changed to Free (unconstrained). This approach simulates the fracture of the bat.
ResultThe displacement plot shows that the bat fractures while in contact with the ball, and that the broken portion separates while rotating.
A video of this analysis example is also available on the official Femtet YouTube channel. Please take a look by clicking here.
