Examples of Contact Analysis

Here are some examples of contact analysis.

 

Example 1. Bodies are in contact (No friction)

The blue body is pressed and hollowed by the red body.

 

 

Example 2. Slipping contact (No friction)

The red body slips into the V-shaped blue body.

 

 

Example 3. Bodies, originally separated, make a slipping contact (No friction)

The red body moves and makes a contact with the blue body. It slips and bends upward .

 

How to View the Contact Force

The contact force can be viewed graphically as field. Also the values for the contact pair can be listed on table.

 

The figures below show the contact forces as field for Example 3.
Their locations and directions can be viewed.

 

 

The contact force can be checked on Result Table.

 

Examples of Non-Convergence

Example 4. The contact surface deforms extensively.

The red body is pressed against the blue body. The contact surface is deforming extensively.

 

 

Example 5. Snap change of deformation

The red and blue bodies are in contact and move downward and upward respectively.

They come apart suddenly, when the calculation might not converge.

 

 

Example 6. Instable balance

In the left figure, the balance is instable and the calculation doesn't converge.

In the right figure, the red body is angled. That makes the direction of deformation predictable, and the calculation converges.

 

Example 7. Indefinite displacement: Case 1 (Load boundary)

 

A load boundary is set on the red body without any displacement constraint.

As a result, the displacement is indefinite and the calculation doesn't converge.

 

Example 8. Indefinite displacement: Case 2 (No constraint)

 

 

The red body has no constraint at all.

As a result, the displacement is indefinite and the calculation doesn't converge.

 

Example 9. Contactor surface is on the other side of contactee surface.

 

 

The contactor is considered to be in contact with the contactee.

The calculation is not to converge.
